History

Hampden Academy was founded in 1803 as a private school and before that was a theological seminary. Currently, it serves as a public school that educates students from Hampden, Winterport, and Newburgh. Founded in 1803, the original Hampden Academy building is on the National Register of Historic Places. A new facility is under construction on the location of the former track. The $51.6 million building, to be located behind the FieldTurf complex, will be completed in 2012.

The front lawn of the academy was the site of the Battle of Hampden during the War of 1812.
